Take the Healthy Hikes Challenge

LPRCA is pleased to be participating in Conservation Ontario’s new initiative, Healthy Hikes! When you sign up online, log the amount of time spent walking, hiking or attending a Healthy Hikes event. Each action earns points. You could be entered to win great prizes!

When you attend one of the events listed below, you will earn 200 points. All events take place at Backus Heritage Conservation Area.

Firefly Walk
June 30: 8 pm Pre-registration is required by calling 519-586-2201 ext 5 Join us on an adventure to learn about the interesting life of fireflies and watch as hundreds of them dazzle in the night sky. An interactive indoor presentation will be followed by an interpretive night walk. Bring your flashlight and dress for the weather. Meet at the Conservation Education Centre. Admission is $2.00/child; $4.00/adult; $10.00/family

Owl Prowl
July 13: 8 pm Pre-registration is required by calling 519-586-2201 ext 5 Owls are amazing birds! Meet in the Conservation Education Centre to learn some fascinating facts about owls before a guided walk to look for and call owls. Bring your flashlight and dress for the weather. Admission is $2.00/child; $4.00/adult; $10.00/family.

Family Orienteering Challenge
July 20: 1-4 pm, Pre-registration is required by calling 519-586-2201 ext 5 Meet at the Conservation Education Centre to learn the basics of map reading and navigation. Once trained and outfitted, families will navigate through a series of courses (basic to intermediate), solving puzzles along the way. Admission is $2.00/child; $4.00/adult; $10.00/ family.

Bird Detectives
August 11: 10 am Pre-registration is required by calling 519-586-2201 ext 5 This hands-on introduction to bird watching and identification will help you become a bird detective. Get to know local bird species found in and around the park. A slideshow presentation will be followed by an interpretive hike and silhouette identification. Dress appropriately for the trail. Meet at the Conservation Education Centre. Admission is by donation.

Creatures of the Night
August 17: 8 pm Pre-registration is required by calling 519-586-2201 ext 5 Meet at the Conservation Education Centre to learn about some of the animals that become active when we are asleep, including bats and opossums. A guided hike follows a brief indoor presentation. Bring your flashlight and dress for the weather. Admission is $2.00/child; $4.00/ adult; $10.00/family.

Living from Plants
August 18: 10 am Interested in getting to know some local native plant species? Then join us on a walk to learn about the benefits of local native plant species, for humans and wildlife. Every day uses of plants and wild edibles will be discussed. Admission is by donation.

Insect Safari
August 24: 1-4 pm Join us for an afternoon of fun as we celebrate insects! Pond dipping, log rolling, crafts, costumes and butterfly catching are included in this adventure. Pick up an insect passport from the Conservation Education Centre. Admission is $2.00/person

Fall Interpretive Walk
October 12: 11 am Enjoy an interactive fall hike to discover the types of trees and wildlife commonly found in this forest region. Search for animal clues along the way! Guided hike departs from the Conservation Education Centre. Admission is by donation.

Summer Nature’s Fitness, 8:30 am
Sunday morning in July & August This series of exercise programs is a great way to start your day. Weekly programs have been designed to use the park’s facilities and will include trail walking, hike and bike, yoga and exercise stations. Meet at the Conservation Education Centre. Cost is $2.00 per person.
